The Storytellers' Guild

From writing a story to crafting one.

“Why do some opening lines make it impossible to stop reading?

Overview

The Storytellers' Guild is where young writers move from writing a story to truly crafting one. Building on the foundations of The Story Forge, students learn how plot structure works, how to give characters real depth, and how to write dialogue that brings a scene to life. They also learn one of the most valuable skills any writer can have: how to edit and improve their own work. Towards the end of the programme, students practise writing under timed conditions, building the calm confidence they will need for school assessments and 11+ creative writing tasks.

Your Child's Journey

Each module builds directly on the previous one to turn fundamental skills into lasting confidence and mastery.

Weeks 1–4

Structure & Plot

Students use a five-part story structure — opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending. They learn to write hooks that grab the reader, endings that satisfy, and how to control the pace of a story.

What Happens / Deliverable:
Five-Part Plot Blueprint
Weeks 5–8

Characters with Depth

Students give their characters motives and conflict, learn to "show, don't tell" emotions, write and punctuate dialogue correctly, and experiment with first-person and third-person viewpoints.

What Happens / Deliverable:
Dialogue Scene & Conflict Arc
Weeks 9–12

Craft, Style & Editing

Students use similes, metaphors and personification with purpose, upgrade their vocabulary, and learn to redraft and self-edit. They practise a 30–40 minute timed story and finish one polished piece for the class showcase.

What Happens / Deliverable:
Polished Showcase Story & Timed Piece
Verified Progression

By the end of The Storytellers' Guild, your child will be able to:

Plan a story in five parts and keep the plot moving
Show a character's feelings through action and dialogue rather than stating them
Punctuate speech correctly and keep a consistent point of view
Use figurative language and ambitious vocabulary deliberately and effectively
Edit their own first draft and explain what they improved
Write a complete, well-structured story in a 30–40 minute timed task
